What’s up guys? Shiningbind here with another episode of Shiningbind Band Talk. If you have that moment, please take the time by following us on Instagram and Facebook and hitting that like button. Also, be sure to give our partner, Time Ends Radio a follow. Anyways, this episode hits close to home as we are going into another song of the week. Yes, we are diving into 18 and Life by Skid Row.

Skid Row is an American rock band that formed in 1986 in Toms River, New Jersey. The rock group obtained commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s when the Glam Metal genre was in decline due to the rise of Grunge. They are classified as a heavy metal rock band. The self-titled debut album as well as their album, Slave to the Grind, had certified multi-platinum and reached number one on the Billboard 200. Anyways, let’s dive in now.

18 and Life is the second single off of their self-titled debut album, and it's the band’s biggest hit as the song reached Number 4 on the US billboard 100 as well as number 11 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The lyrics behind the song talk of and 18 year old who gets life sentence due to a murder of another teen. It is quite a powerful song and reminds me of a similar story of what had happened to my cousin, who had passed back in 2018. It’s quite a depressing song as someone so young goes on a downward spiral and ends up behind bars. Luckily, my cousin didn’t get life in prison, but he was there for armed robbery. A powerful message that is delivered from the unique voice of Sebastian Bach. Sound wise, it has a very distinct sound, especially with the opening which is very unique and ear catching.

It’s quite a complex sound, but simple at the same time. Moreover, it has quite a chemistry with the lyrics. Has a dark feeling, especially when a young adult is being served life in prison.

Overall, I give this song a 9 out of 10 because it’s dark and relatable, but gives off a sound that we can all remember. I do recommend it to friends and family.
