SONG OF THE WEEK: Obscure by Dir En Grey

What’s up guys? Shiningbind here with another episode of Shiningbind Band Talk. Before I get to it, if you have a free moment, please take that moment by hitting that follow button to keep up with the latest updates. This episode goes out to one of my loyal viewers who requested I do a review on this insane song by the Japanese Death Metal band, Dir En Grey. Yes, we are about to dive into the song Obscure. Let’s get started shall we?

So Kyo, the singer from Dir En Grey has quite an interesting voice as he is quite versatile with it where he can range from normal singing to growling and screaming, and it’s very noticeable in the song Obscure. I find it quite unique with the vocal range in a death metal band, especially coming from a person who is not really into Death Metal. Anyways, the overall sound is quite insane whether it’s the drumming, guitar playing, etc. It’s quite a complex sound and very adrenaline rushing. Now, let’s dive into the lyrics now.

So with the lyrics, I had to use a translator because I only know very little Japanese. Anyways, when I translated the lyrics, it was quite a shocking surprise as it defines a very controversial subject here in the US. Yes, it’s a song about abortion. From what I have seen, the music video is censored because of how graphic it is. It was known as one of the scariest and most vile music videos of all time. Anyways seeing the fact it’s about abortion, I’m not going to break it down fully, especially because the topic is a hit or miss.

Overall, I give this song a 8 out of 10 because although the meaning is about a controversial subject once translated, I love the sound of it. The sound is quite insane and complex where you can feel the rush. Recommending it? Well, for those who want to listen or see the music, I will say now, just watch at your own risk. Anyways, that’s it for now on this episode until next time on Shiningbind Band Talk. Peace out!
