This episode for the week hits close to home as it has a personal story from my heart. Yes, we are talking about Sweet Child O Mine by the legendary Guns N Roses. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Often abbreviated at GNR, Guns N Roses are a hard rock band that formed back in 1985 in Los Angeles, California. Since we pretty much know who Guns N Roses are, that’s all I’m going to say right there. Now on to Sweet Child O Mine.

Sweet Child O Mine is off their debut album, Appetite for Destruction. The song was released in 1988 as the album’s third single, and it topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the band’s only number 1 single. However, when it comes to the song, it was known for Slash’s “String skipping”. It was originally a circus melody until Izzy Stradlin wanted to hear Slash play it again. Since then along with some chords and Duff creating a bassline along with the lyrics, Sweet Child O Mine was created. This song had powerful lyrics which can go either way whether about a girl or a child and that’s what I love about the lyrics because it’s an open meaning.

It also touches my heart because back in 1988, when I was only 4 months old. My mom sent in a request to a guy who had connections. After that, when Guns N Roses played their hit song, Sweet Child O Mine, Axl Rose dedicated it to yours truly. I remember years later, my mom told me that story and played the tape. It made me smile. In the end, the song has a special place in my heart. The song has a catchy tune where it is quite recognizable, even to those who are not hardcore Guns N Roses fans. The sound is quite more complex whereas when you hear other bands from the 80s, their sound is more simple.

Overall, I give this song a 10 out of 10 because it not only has a special place in my heart, but it had a unique sound from its time. They were definitely ahead at their time, especially because they are classified as a hard rock band. I do recommend it. Until next time on Shiningbind Band Talk, peace out!
